Ring road, glaciers, volcanic landscapes and the northern lights — all in one extraordinary island.
Iceland is one of those places that genuinely looks different from everywhere else on earth — black lava fields, glacier tongues sliding into valleys, waterfalls that appear around every corner, and skies that turn green at night in winter. It's a destination that rewards those who go beyond the Golden Circle tourist trail.
The ring road is 1,330km of pure freedom — you can drive the entire island in 10 days and never run out of things to stop for. But the real Iceland is in the details: knowing which highland roads are worth the detour, where to camp legally, how to time the northern lights, and which waterfalls to skip entirely.
We've driven it in summer midnight sun and in winter ice — and we know exactly how to sequence a trip that feels genuinely Icelandic rather than just a highlights reel.
Fly into Keflavík, pick up your rental car. Drive to Reykjavík — 45 minutes. Afternoon walk around the old harbour and Hallgrímskirkja church. Dinner on Laugavegur street. Early night — you'll need the energy.
Iceland's classic day loop — but done right. Start at Þingvellir at dawn before tour buses arrive, walk between the tectonic plates, watch Strokkur erupt every 6 minutes at Geysir, and stand at the edge of Gullfoss waterfall. Be back for sunset over Reykjavík.
Drive east along the south coast. Seljalandsfoss waterfall — walk behind it. Skógafoss — climb the 527 steps for the view. Reynisfjara black sand beach with its basalt columns and dangerous surf. Overnight near Vík.
Drive to the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón — icebergs the size of houses floating in silence. Walk to the Diamond Beach where ice washes up on black sand. Optional glacier walk on Vatnajökull with crampons. One of the most otherworldly days in Europe.
The east fjords are where most tourists disappear and the real Iceland begins. Narrow roads hugging dramatic fjord walls, tiny fishing villages, wild reindeer on the hillsides. Overnight in Seyðisfjörður — the most beautiful village in Iceland.
Two days in the north — Europe's most powerful waterfall at Dettifoss, the volcanic moonscape around Lake Mývatn, the geothermal pools at Mývatn Nature Baths. This area feels more alien than anywhere else on the island.
Drive to Akureyri, Iceland's second city. Morning whale watching from Húsavík — the best whale watching in Europe. Afternoon drive west along the dramatic Tröllaskagi peninsula. Overnight in a remote guesthouse.
Snæfellsnes is Iceland in miniature — everything the island has to offer in one 90km peninsula. The glacier volcano Jules Verne wrote about, black lava fields, seal colonies, the haunting Búðir church. Drive back towards Reykjavík.
Book the Blue Lagoon for the morning before your flight — it's on the way to the airport. Return your car, check in, fly home carrying 10 days of volcanic dust and memories. Book the Blue Lagoon months in advance.
Direct flights from most German airports to Keflavík (KEF). Icelandair, Wizz Air and easyJet all fly routes. About 3 hours from Frankfurt or Munich. Book early — Iceland flights fill up fast in summer.
Rental car is the only way to do Iceland properly. A regular car covers the ring road — a 4WD opens up the highland F-roads. Book months in advance for summer. Fuel is expensive; budget accordingly.
Guesthouses and farm stays along the ring road. Avoid chain hotels — the best experiences are small family-run places with a hot tub outside. Book everything months ahead for summer travel.
Waterproof everything — jacket, trousers, boots. Layers are essential; weather changes every 20 minutes. Microspikes for winter ice. A good camera. Swimwear for hot pots everywhere.
Summer (Jun–Aug) for midnight sun, road access and hiking. Winter (Nov–Feb) for northern lights and ice caves. Shoulder seasons are quieter and cheaper but some roads close. Never predictable.
Fill up the tank whenever you see a petrol station — they're far apart. Download offline maps before you go. Don't chase the northern lights — go where we tell you and be patient. Never walk on moss.
