About the destination
Why Jordan

Jordan is one of the Middle East's most accessible and rewarding destinations — and still deeply underrated among European travelers. The country is safe, the people are genuinely warm, and the landscape shifts from ancient stone cities to vast red desert to the lowest point on earth within a few hours' drive.

Petra is extraordinary — but most people see it wrong. They arrive at 10am, walk the main Siq, photograph the Treasury, and leave. We'll tell you to be at the gates at 6am before the tour groups arrive, which trails to take to see the city from above, and where to eat lunch that isn't in a tourist restaurant.

Wadi Rum is where Jordan really gets under your skin. Sleeping in a Bedouin camp under a sky with no light pollution, riding through silent valleys of sandstone — it's the kind of experience that stays with you for years.

What to expect
PetraThe rose-red city carved into cliffsides. Walk the Siq at dawn, take the high trail to avoid crowds, stay until the light turns golden.
Wadi RumMars-like desert of red sand and sandstone towers. Overnight in a Bedouin camp, 4WD excursions at sunrise.
Dead SeaThe lowest point on earth. Float in salt water, cover yourself in black mud, watch the sun set over the Israeli hills.
Jerash & AqabaSome of the best-preserved Roman ruins outside Italy, and a Red Sea resort town worth a night.
Food & hospitalityMansaf, mezze, Arabic coffee. Jordanian hospitality is legendary — people will invite you in for tea constantly.

Day
1
Arrival
Amman — first impressions

Fly into Queen Alia Airport, transfer to your hotel in downtown Amman. Afternoon walk around Rainbow Street and the old Roman theatre. Dinner in a local restaurant — order the mezze and share everything. Amman is a city that rewards wandering.

Day
2
Ancient Rome
Jerash & Ajloun

Day trip north to Jerash — one of the best preserved Roman cities in the world. Colonnaded streets, two theatres, triumphal arches. Almost no tourists compared to similar sites in Italy. Stop at Ajloun castle on the way back for views over the Jordan Valley.

Day
3
Dead Sea
The lowest point on earth

Drive down to the Dead Sea — the road descending below sea level is strange and beautiful. Float effortlessly in water so salty you can't sink. Black mineral mud is free and everywhere. Sunset over the Israeli hills across the water is extraordinary. Stay the night nearby.

Day
4
King's Highway
Madaba, Kerak & the south

Drive south on the ancient King's Highway — Jordan's most scenic road. Stop at Madaba for the Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land. Lunch at a local restaurant with views over the valley. Kerak castle in the afternoon — a massive Crusader fortress. Continue to Petra area.

Day
5–6
Petra
The rose-red city

Two full days in Petra — you need them. Day one: in at 6am before crowds, walk the Siq, reach the Treasury in silence. Take the high trail to the Monastery via the back route. Day two: the less-visited areas — the High Place of Sacrifice, Petra by Night if available. Stay in Wadi Musa village.

Day
7
Desert
Wadi Rum — into the red desert

Drive to Wadi Rum and into the protected desert area. A Bedouin guide takes you by 4WD through towering sandstone valleys, ancient rock inscriptions, and silence unlike anywhere else. Sunset from a high dune. Overnight in a Bedouin camp under the stars — no electricity, no noise.

Day
8
Red Sea
Aqaba — a night by the water

Drive to Aqaba on the Red Sea — Jordan's only coastline. Good snorkelling on the coral reefs, fresh fish for lunch, a completely different pace after the desert. One relaxed night before the journey north.

Day
9
Departure
Back to Amman & fly home

Drive back to Amman — 4 hours via the Desert Highway. Stop at a local bakery for ka'ak bread and coffee. Check in, fly home. Jordan has a way of making people want to come back immediately.

Before you go
Practical information
Getting there

Direct flights from Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin to Amman Queen Alia (AMM). Royal Jordanian, Lufthansa and Ryanair all fly routes. About 4.5 hours. The Jordan Pass (visa + attractions) saves money — buy it before you fly.

🚗
Getting around

Rental car gives the most freedom for the King's Highway and Petra area. For Wadi Rum you need a Bedouin guide with a 4WD — we arrange this for you. Taxis are cheap in Amman. Roads are good quality.

🏠
Where to stay

Boutique hotels in Amman, guesthouses near Petra, and a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum. The camp experience is the highlight of many people's trips — don't skip it to save money. We pick places with character, not chains.

👗
What to wear

Dress modestly outside of tourist areas — shoulders and knees covered. Lightweight layers for the desert — it's hot in the day and cold at night. Comfortable walking shoes for Petra's uneven stone paths. Sunscreen always.

🌡
Best time to visit

Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) are perfect — warm but not scorching. Summer is very hot, especially in Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. Winter is fine in Amman and Petra but cold at night in the desert.

💬
Local tips

Buy the Jordan Pass — it covers visa costs and Petra entry and pays for itself immediately. Accept tea when offered — refusing is considered rude. Bargain gently at markets but never aggressively. Learn 5 words of Arabic and people will love you for it.
