Wild volcanic cliffs, ancient trails through cloud forest, Atlantic light that makes everything glow.

Madeira is one of Europe's most underrated destinations. It looks almost subtropical — banana trees lining the roads, hydrangeas growing wild, black volcanic rock dropping straight into the Atlantic. But it's also genuinely wild and dramatic in a way that surprises people.

The levada network is the island's secret weapon — hundreds of kilometres of ancient irrigation channels turned into walking trails, cutting through cloud forest, along cliff edges, and into the island's misty interior.

We planned this itinerary carefully and came back with a long list of things most visitors miss entirely. The north coast, the interior plateaus, the small restaurants with no menus. These are the things we put in your guide.

01
Arrival

Funchal & the old town

Land, pick up your rental car at the airport and drive to your accommodation in the old town — about 25 minutes. Evening walk through the Zona Velha, dinner at a local tasca. Get a poncha and walk along the waterfront.

02
Mountain

Pico do Arieiro & Levada do Caldeirão Verde

Early start. Drive to Pico do Arieiro (1,818m) for sunrise above the clouds — one of the best experiences on the island. Then the 4-hour levada walk through tunnels and cloud forest to Caldeirão Verde. Take the north tunnel variant, not the exposed ridge.

03
North Coast

São Vicente & Porto Moniz

Drive the dramatic north coast road. Volcanic caves in São Vicente, natural lava pools at Porto Moniz for a swim — arrive before 11am. Lunch at the pool-side restaurants, drive back via the interior plateau.

04
Plateau

Paul da Serra & Fanal forest

Drive up to the Paul da Serra plateau — open, windy, otherworldly. Then into the Fanal laurisilva forest — ancient laurel trees in the mist, completely silent. One of the most atmospheric places on the island.

05
East

Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula

Drive to the eastern tip of Madeira. The most dramatic walk on the island — barren red and ochre cliffs dropping into deep blue sea. 2.5 hours return. Stop at Caniçal fishing village for lunch on the way back.

06
Villages

Santana, Boaventura & the north

A slower day through the north coast villages. Santana's traditional triangular houses, cliffs at Boaventura, a levada walk through quiet forest. Lunch at a village restaurant with no menu — they serve what they have.

07
South & relax

Cabo Girão & Câmara de Lobos

Morning at Cabo Girão — one of Europe's highest sea cliffs, glass floor viewpoint. Drive down to Câmara de Lobos where Churchill used to paint. Afternoon free. Final dinner in Funchal at a proper restaurant — book ahead.

08
Departure

Morning market & fly home

Morning at the Mercado dos Lavradores — the island's famous covered market, best before 10am. Pick up local honey, wine, dried fruit. Return car, fly home. The smell of eucalyptus and sea salt stays with you for days.

Practical information

Getting there

Direct flights from most German airports to Funchal (FNC). Lufthansa, TAP, easyJet and Ryanair all fly. About 3.5 hours from Frankfurt. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for good prices.

🚗
Getting around

Rental car is essential. Roads are well maintained but mountain roads are narrow — an automatic makes life easier. Budget €30–50/day. Book ahead in high season.

🏠
Where to stay

Funchal is the best base. We recommend a central quinta or boutique hotel over the large resort hotels on the coast. €80–180/night for good options.

🥾
What to pack

Layers are essential — mornings on the peaks can be cold. Waterproof jacket, good hiking shoes, sunscreen. The interior can be wet while the coast is warm.

🌡
Best time to visit

October to May is ideal — mild temperatures, lush landscape, fewer crowds. June to September is fine but busier. The island is pleasant year-round.

💬
Local tips

Learn a few words of Portuguese. Poncha is the local drink, espetada the local dish. Eat where there are no English menus outside. Avoid the cable cars — overpriced and crowded.
